In the course of the sume afternoon

I received a visit from the head of the Kuang Yuan Office,

who asked me if I had any amendments to propose b. the

Regulations as they stood because, if so, he was prepared

to consider them. Seeing that had I proposed any amendment

as suggested a legitimate inference that the rest of the

text met with my approval could thereafter have been

drawn, I simply informed him that, as the agreemont pururd-

ine opium had been drawn up between the foveinaunts of

Great Britain and China I could not, as a subtrainato,

say what view the former would take of the regulations

until they had had an opportunity of perusing them 1

ed Mr. Giles to put to the Opium Prohibition Baresk, ano

ible that a garbled version of this incident may form the
